Google Now lets you control Nest Thermostat with voice commands

There’s some good news for Nest thermostat users that are having Android or iOS smartphones. Nest is now integrated with Google Now that makes it easy for you to control the wireless thermostat with just your voice.

That means anyone who owns the thermostat will able to tweak the temperature by saying it out loud via the Google app on Android or iPhone. You don’t have to type anything. Just say “OK Google” followed by any of the following commands such as change temperature to, set Nest at, turn thermostat to and seemingly everything and along with the preferred temperature and the Nest will do it. You can also tap the mic and speak a Nest command. Alternatively, voice commands through an Android Wear smartwatch will also let you change the temperature in your home. Yet another reason you don’t have to leave the couch.

Another feature is a little more advanced. Nest has always been able to recognize when you’re away, but now Google Now will also recognize when you’re arriving and automatically communicate with the smart thermostat to heat up or cool down the house. This allows you to fire up an HVAC system so that you’ll be able to come back to a comfortable place without unnecessarily wasting energy during the day. All this information will be displayed in a Google Now info card on your smartphone.

Both these features are available on computers running Mac OS, Chrome OS, or Windows as well. But make sure you have installed the latest version of Chrome. In order to enable this feature, you will have to opt-in so that Google can access the account and enable cards for Google Now. If you don’t already have a Google account, you’ll be prompted to create one. The functionality offered by this integration is limited when compared to the official Nest app, but it’s a pretty way of controlling the connected device.
