Indian Android users can Download YouTube videos, watch them offline later

Very soon, YouTube users in India will be able to download YouTube videos and watch them anywhere, anytime without a data connection.

The announcement was made at an event in Gurgaon, India on Monday alongside its first low cost Android One initiative in the country. YouTube executive Cesar Sengupta said,

This means YouTube users can download videos in the app when they are connected to a Wi-Fi network, and later watch them offline. This would be a great benefit in situations when your network connection is slow, and also for when you want to watch your favorite videos again and again.

Medianama reports that the offline playback will not just be restricted to music videos, unlike YouTube’s subscription-based YouTube Music Key. Android users can store any videos on the streaming service to their phones, tablets or computers.

As of now, it is not clear whether this new offline playback is restricted to YouTube in India, or if this will be an Android only feature, but in either case, it is good news for consumers. YouTube is a significant source of content in India, and for a while, YouTube search was the second largest search in India, second to Google Search.

No details were revealed on how advertising will work offline, but Medianama speculates that ads could be synced offline when the phone is connected to the internet and played back when users play download videos.
