Reversible USB Type-C connector can be easily plugged-in without worrying which is the right way up

Following an announcement made back in December, the USB Implementers Forum has revealed the finalized design for the new reversible USB interface which has been specifically created to replace every size of all current USB connectors.

The new Type-C specifications feature a new cable and connector scheme which is compatible across mobile devices, laptops and tablets.

The new design of the reversible USB allows it to be connected without worrying which is the right way up. Like Apple’s Lightning connector, it can be inserted into its port either way.

“Interest in the USB Type-C connector has not only been global, but cross-industry as well,” said USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman Brad Saunders. “Representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive and IoT industries have been knocking down our door anticipating this new standard. This specification is the culmination of an extensive, cooperative effort among industry leaders to standardize the next generation USB connector as a long-lasting, robust solution.”

The new USB is similar in size to the current micro USB 2.0 Type-B connectors, typically used for charging mobile phones and cameras. It will also support USB Power Delivery up to 100W, with additional support for scalable power charging and future USB performance needs.

The smaller port resembles Apple’s Lightning port

The first USB cables were introduced in the mid-1990s and until now, could be inserted into the ports in one way to facilitate a data connection.
