Small robotic copters can be both safe and maneuverable, but their small size does not support heavier cargo and their battery life is limited for short flights. To increase the potential of robotic copters, one idea is to pair it with a movable landing platform that can carry it to a site of operation and transport heavier cargo.
As you watch the video, the quadcopter and a tank-like platform both converge on a pre-set location and both robots move themselves into position as the quadcopter slowly descends. The rotors right the quadcopter properly and finally cut out just as the landing gear touches the ground. It’s a satisfying sight.
Having both ground and aerial perspectives can also be useful during a mission. One challenge is to make sure the vehicles have the ability to rendezvous and perform coordinated landings autonomously. The robot, described in a paper by John M. Daly, Yan Ma, and Steven L. Waslander, would allow military drones to come in for a landing on other autonomous land drones to recharge or move off the battlefield.It could also allow for commercial drones to land without risking getting tangled up in unseen grass or shrubbery. It’s also really scary.
Although it sounds simple, the process is difficult and time-consuming. It’s interesting to watch how a pair of robots can work together to get things done.
